Upgrading the Ainol Novo7 Paladin to Android 4.0.3 (Unofficial Release) and Rooting

There are a lot of random images for the Paladin floating around, some work, some don't, and information to install them is scattered all over.

Explanation and Procedure after the break:

What to Get:
4.0.3 Unofficial Image
ClockWorkMod Recovery
Superuser/Busybox

Explanation:
If you have already installed CWM recovery you will need to revert back to stock recovery. The 4.0.3 image will not apply cleanly from CWM and you will be left with a semi-broken (but recoverable) device. Otherwise its very straightforward, flash the 4.0.3 image with stock recovery, then flash CWM with the stock recovery, then flash superuser with CWM.

Procedure:

  • Make backups: nandroid, Titanium Backup, whatever...
  • Only if you have CWM recovery already installed, from a root terminal window on the device or an adb shell
    # inand_flash_image recovery /system/recovery.cpio.img.bak
  • Copy the update_knight_4.0.3.zip image onto the root of the SD card and rename it to update.zip
  • From powered down state, press and hold Volume+ and Power buttons. Wait through the android outline splash screen and don't release them until you get the 3D android with the open chest image.
  • Wait quite a long time (15 minutes?) as the update is applied and your tablet reboots. Do not touch until your device is at the lockscreen.
  • Delete the update.zip file on your SD card root.
  • Copy the cwm-recovery.zip image onto the root of your SD card and rename it to update.zip
  • From powered down state, press and hold Volume+ and Power buttons. Wait through the android outline splash screen and don't release them until you get the 3D android with the open chest image.
  • Wait briefly for CWM to be installed and your tablet reboots to the lock screen.
  • Copy the Superuser-3.0.7-bb-mips32r2-ics.zip file onto the root of your SD card, no need to rename it.
  • From powered down state, press and hold Volume+ and Power buttons. Wait through the android outline splash screen and don't release them until you get the CWM recovery menu
  • Select "install zip from sdcard" and navigate to your superuser package and confirm
  • Take a nandroid backup of your fresh 4.0.3 + su/busybox image
  • Reboot and enjoy
